E3D nozzle
The E3D nozzle measures 12.5 mm in height and features a 7 mm hexagonal part for a spanner. All nozzles have a consistent 2 mm input diameter for filament. However, both brass and hardened E3D nozzles have an output diameter ranging from 0.2 mm to 1 mm, designed for use with 1.75 mm filament.Keep in mind that the smaller the output diameter, the slower the print speed should be. It is also crucial that the output diameter is smaller than the filament diameter.
Hardened E3D Nozzles
Hardened E3D nozzles are designed to be used with E3D V5/V6 heating blocks. When selecting a nozzle for your 3D printer, ensure compatibility with the model of your heating block.Compared to standard brass nozzles, hardened nozzles offer a longer lifespan and have these distinguishing features:
- Resistant to high temperatures;
- Better temperature retention;
- Durable against abrasive materials found in engineering plastics;
- Compatible with a wide range of filament types.
Maintenance
Despite their advantages, hardened nozzles can become clogged, especially when using low-quality filament. Cleaning the nozzle is straightforward. First, heat the hotend to the operating temperature for the filament and remove the filament. Then, carefully remove the nozzle while holding the heating block in place to avoid dislodging it from the mount. If a silicone cover is blocking access to the nozzle, carefully remove it without damaging it. Unscrew the nozzle using the spanner provided with your 3D printer. If no spanner is available, a 7 mm wrench will suffice.Important! When removing and reinstalling the nozzle, be careful as you are working near very hot surfaces. Avoid burns by not touching the hotend or nozzle with bare hands.
Once removed, heat the nozzle to a temperature slightly higher than the filament’s operating temperature, then clean it using a special needle with a diameter matching the nozzle’s output.
